Assisi is a Northern Irish organisation with its own premises in Bangor, County Down. It provides a rescue and rehoming facility for around 230 dogs and puppies and 420 cats and kittens each year. It is supported by The Friends of Assisi fundraising group, which has registered charitable status. Assisi's objectives are: -
to relieve the suffering of animals who are in need of care and attention by providing for their protection, rescue and treatment -
the promotion of good animal welfare in the community -
the advancement of education of the public in the care and treatment of animals Assisi operates a strict 'no kill' policy for its animals and promotes responsible pet ownership through a community programme of neutering and spaying dogs and cats. Talks on pet care are given to schools and youth groups. At any one time the sanctuary is home to about 100 small domestic animals. Around 700 are rehomed each year as family pets. All paid staff at the sanctuary are involved in direct animal care. All administration of the sanctuary and the charity is carried out by volunteers.
