Les Amis des Chats

The charity Les Amis des Chats (LADC) was created in March 2000 in response to demand from inhabitants of Roquecor, in south west France. The association is a charity registered on 14 March 2000 under the 1901 law at the Bureau des Associations, the Sous-Prefecture de Castelsarrasin. All LADC workers are volunteers and extremely hard working. The association has a committee which includes two veterinarians and one veterinary nurse.

Les Amis des Chats' objectives

Under French legislation, a local council can give an association permission under a bylaw to neuter stray cats and return them to the capture site. The cats are identified by tattoo under the name of the association or the council, as indicated in the bylaw. Cats may be tested against feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) and feline leukaemia virus (FeLV). LADC now has authorisation to work in 18 villages that are sited mainly in department 82 (Tarn and Garonne) but also in departments 46 (Lot) and 47 (Lot et Garonne).

Stray cats are neutered and identified by the veterinary practice closest to capture site or most convenient. They currently have 11 veterinary practices that deal with stray cats. LADC also supplies neutering vouchers to cat owners with limited means. The owner pays the cost of the operation less the value of the voucher and uses the veterinarian of their choice. LADC reimburses the veterinarian directly the value of the voucher. Forty veterinary practices in the region accept LADC vouchers.

There is a huge and growing demand for placement and rehoming of stray and abandoned cats and kittens and they have one main foster centre.
