Training tips from John Regis

John Regis running

John Regis

John Regis was one of the foremost characters in the golden era of British athletics in the late eighties and early nineties. John mainly competed in the 200 metres and was the first British athlete to run the distance in under 20 seconds. He still holds the UK record in this event.

Many supporters take part in running events, what would you say is the first thing to do when you have entered a race?
To start training straight away. You need to give yourself every opportunity to do your best so an intense training programme is essential.

How do you keep motivated when you are training?
I look towards the outcome. Goal setting Is an essential part of training in any sport. They need to be specific, measurable and most of all achievable. When these targets are then reached it can give you satisfaction and make you hungry for more.

How valuable do you consider the work of organisations like the Blue Cross in promoting responsible pet ownership?
It is hugely important. There are too many cases of animal cruelty, and there should be more organisations like the Blue Cross to ensure that animals are going to homes where they are well looked after and loved. Everything should be done in the best interest of the animal, so the Blue Cross is very valuable.

Finally, what is your five point plan to successful training for a running event?

  1. Choose the right event to compete in.
  2. Plan my training regime in advance and start working on this.
  3. Set myself a recovery period.
  4. Set up a dietary plan and keep a diary of my food intake.
  5. Finally, the last stage of the plan is victory!
