The Blue Cross animal adoption centre in Tiverton, is calling on local animal lovers to consider making older animals their pets. When Sweet Pea, a 13-year-old collie cross, was taken to The Blue Cross after being retired from her life on the farm, staff were concerned that her age would cause her to be overlooked by prospective owners who tend to want younger pets. Happily for Sweet Pea, local resident Nicky Lesser was looking for a dog that would fit in with her young Jack Russell, Daisy and her elderly Blue Cross cat, Tilly. Sweet Pea immediately caught Nickys eye and she has is now happily settled. Nicky said: It seems right that older dogs should be given a chance to live out their lives in comfort and with love. Everyone always looks for puppies, but older dogs make fantastic companions and shouldnt be overlooked. Sweet Pea is a beautiful dog who has settled right in and it feels as if she has always been part of the family. She has bundles of energy and is enjoying swimming in the river and snoozing in the afternoons. Centre manager Damian Harrison said: Finding a gentle and loving home for Sweet Pea is just why The Blue Cross exists. This highlights the constant need to find caring homes for older pets and our success in doing just that".
