The Blue Cross Britain's pet charity

Could you rise to a camel challenge?

The Blue Cross, Britain’s pet charity, is challenging intrepid animal lovers to trek across the Kubachi Desert, Inner Mongolia, on a Bactrian camel to raise money for its valuable animal welfare work.

Inner Mongolia is a vast territory that stretches in a crescent for some 2,700 kilometres across northern China. It is unspoilt by tourism and provides a dramatic environment for an adventure. The trek will wind through beautiful sand dunes and the grasslands, which are home to the famous Mongolian horses and Bactrian camels.

During the nine-day adventure participants will benefit from the generous hospitality of the local people and absorb the culture of this fascinating region. They will also be trained in handling and riding their camel between its two humps on a carpet saddle with stirrups. Day nine will be spent exploring or relaxing in Beijing, the capital of China, with an opportunity to visit the stunning Summer Palace and the Forbidden City.

Tracey Chittock, events officer at The Blue Cross, said: “ We hope lots of people will sign up to take part in this exciting challenge. Without the volunteer fundraisers who are willing to give their time and energy to activities like this trip we would unable to continue our vital work.”

The Blue Cross is one of Britain’s oldest animal welfare charities and relies entirely on donations. To take part in this adventure next September 2006, call Tracey or Heather on 01993 825557 or email events@bluecross.org.uk for further information. Participants will need to sign up with a £300 registration fee and then raise sponsorship of £2,500.

Notes to editors
The Blue Cross is Britain's pet charity, providing practical support, information and advice for pet and horse owners. Through its network of animal adoption centres it rehomes thousands of animals each year. Its hospitals provide veterinary care for the pets of people who cannot afford private vets' fees.
