Older cats need homes at Christmas

The Blue Cross animal adoption centre in Thirsk is currently caring for five cats, that because of their advanced years are being overlooked as potential new pets in the run up to Christmas.

Fred, Barney, Splodge, Midge, and Liquorice, are all between 10 and 12 years of age. The cats came to the centre for a variety of reasons, such as their owners moving abroad or work commitments. The cats are all sociable and friendly, although Splodge and Midge can be timid and need owners that will help them settle into their new homes. Staff at the centre are worried that these older cats won’t find homes in time for Christmas.

Centre manager Wendy Ellison said: “We’re desperate for the cats to be adopted before Christmas. They would love nothing more than to have a place to call their own. Many people think cats of this age are too old to rehome, but as cats can live into their twenties these animals only be halfway through their lives. A new home would be the best Christmas present these cats could have.”

All of the cats cared for by The Blue Cross will leave the centre having been vaccinated, neutered and microchipped. A home visit will be carried out to check the suitability of the environment for each animal.

Anyone who thinks they can offer any of the cats loving new homes should call The Blue Cross adoption centre in Thirsk on 01845 577 759, or visit Parklands, Station Road, Topcliffe, Thirsk.
