Kitten survives 30 mile engine trip

A tiny five-month-old kitten has survived a 30 mile trip from Plymouth to Torbay stuck inside a coach engine compartment.

The stray kitten was taken to The Blue Cross animal adoption centre in Torbay when she was discovered during a routine engine inspection. Staff have called the kitten Diesel, as she was covered in the fuel when she was rescued. Diesel was very traumatised, her eyes were streaming, and she was wheezing due to the fumes and heat.

She was kept in a quiet pen at The Blue Cross centre where staff coaxed her to eat, cleaned her up and gave her veterinary treatment. Diesel has now been rehomed to a local family who saw her when they visited the centre looking for a new pet.

Blue Cross centre manager, Laura Valentine said: “Diesel is obviously a very lucky and brave little kitten to have survived a thirty mile trip in a hot, dirty engine. Despite a frightening experience she is a very affectionate, sweet cat and we’re delighted to have found her a good home.”

Diesel’s new owners, Mr and Mrs Travers said: “Diesel is a lovely kitten - our daughter Lucy fell in love with her straightaway. Diesel’s been through a lot, but we are really grateful to The Blue Cross for taking care of her. She has settled in well with our other cat, Fred, and is already part of the family.”

Anyone who thinks they can offer a home to any of the cats at The Blue Cross adoption centre in Torbay should call 01803 327 728, or visit Ashley Priors Lane, Watcombe, Torquay between 10.30 and 16.00 every day except Wednesday.
