Pedigree pets need new homes

The Blue Cross animal adoption centre in Thirsk is appealing for new homes for the full bred dogs in its care. Like all the cross-bred dogs in our care, the pedigree dogs were brought to the centre after their owners could no longer look after them and now they are all eager to find permanent homes.

Nelson is a two-year-old male Bull Mastiff who came to the centre because his owners’ circumstances had changed. He would love to find a new home where he will shower owners with affection in return for lots of fuss.

Mitzi is a six-year-old female Shar Pei who was brought to the charity because her owner fell ill and was no longer able to look after her. Although like many of her breed she can be independent and strong willed, Mitzi loves company and would be very rewarding in an experienced home.

Woody is a four-year-old male Rottweiler who loves attention and plenty of walks. His owners brought him to The Blue Cross when they could no longer look after him. He is a big softy who likes a game and is great fun to be around, but he does need to be the only pet in the household, and requires an experienced handler.

Lyn Raine, Blue Cross animal behaviour advisor at Thirsk said: “Many people don’t realise that in addition to the crossbreeds we have pedigree dogs in our care, available for adoption. These dogs have come to us through no fault of their own, and we would love to see them all in happy new homes as soon as possible.”

The Blue Cross, Britain’s Pet Charity, neuters (age permitting), vaccinates, worms and microchips all animals before they are adopted. Animals also receive six weeks’ free pet insurance. The Blue Cross centre at Thirsk has successfully rehomed over 150 animals so far this year.

Thirsk animal adoption centre was opened in 1987, and was partly converted from old boarding kennels. One building on the site was an ablution block for the RAF during the Second World War. The centre serves North Yorkshire, Teeside and parts of West Yorkshire. A new cattery and reception was built in 1999. The centre can accommodate up to 24 dogs and 40 cats. Hundreds of animals are successfully rehomed every year.

To contact the centre please call 01845 577759. Opening hours: Tuesday – Sunday: 10am - 5pm. Closed on Mondays and Bank Holidays.

The Blue Cross is Britain's pet charity, providing practical support, information and advice for pet and horse owners. Through its network of animal adoption centres it rehomes thousands of animals each year. Its hospitals provide veterinary care for the pets of people who cannot afford private vets' fees.
