Dognapping is the fastest growing crime in the UK and is on the increase, according to new research. Owners are being urged to protect their dog from joining the 40,000 reported missing each year to pet insurers. Dognapping has become a lucrative business for thieves. Jayne Hayes, whose own dog was stolen, set up a website two-and-a-half years ago to help other dog owners find their pets. The site: www.doglost.co.uk has now reunited around 1,200 dogs with their owners. Caroline Reay, head veterinary surgeon at The Blue Cross, says as well as getting your dog micro-chipped, there are other safety measures you can take: Ensure that you have good fences; keep gates and doors shut; never let your dog out in the street or on "the green" on his own and train him to come when called. Also, it is wise to have your dog neutered - both males and females are less likely to roam. Above all, if you aren't sure of your fences, don't leave your dog unattended in the garden, she adds.
