Pet-sitters can ease holiday makers’ worry

With the festive season underway, housesitters are expanding their services to include looking after pets.

People with pets who are concerned when they go on holiday can take advantage of specialist services in animal care that provide peace of mind when you’re away. Some companies act as an agency for housesitters and others employ them directly, allowing you to deal with the company instead of the individual if problems arise.

Julie Bedford, animal behaviourist at The Blue Cross, explains: “Most animals will prefer to stay in their own homes rather than go into boarding kennels and catteries. It makes good sense to employ a housesitter, but always check the company’s credentials beforehand or better still go on a personal recommendation."

In terms of your pet, “be honest about your animal's behaviour; don't expect a house sitter to take on a problem animal,” she says.

She adds: “It’s a good idea to write out a detailed list of the animal’s routine, likes, dislikes, quirks, food, how it likes/tolerates being handled and where it sleeps. The more information the house sitter has the better the animal will be cared for as the routine will be less disruptive.”

It’s also important to make sure you provide telephone numbers of your vet, relations and friends in case of an emergency. Also, ensure plenty of food is available and take the time to show the house sitter exactly how you manage your animals, for example piping paws and grooming.
