Following reports in the media about cats poisoned by permethrin, a chemical used in flea treatment designed for dogs, The Blue Cross is reminding pet owners to always seek veterinary advice before treating their pets. Caroline Reay, Blue Cross chief veterinary surgeon said: "At The Blue Cross animal hospital in Merton we see many cases of cats who have been given flea treatment for dogs. Pet owners should never give medication meant for other animals, or humans, to their pet. Before treating your pet, even for what appears to be a basic problem, always ask advice from your vet. Medication from your vet will always be more effective and buying 'off the shelf' without professional advice can be very harmful to your pets."
