Launch of National Equine Welfare Protocol

National equine welfare protocol doc

The Blue Cross is one of a number of equine welfare organisations that have linked together to launch a National Equine Welfare Protocol.

This protocol was developed by representatives from local and national government, police, welfare organisations and others with an interest in equine welfare. It is applicable throughout the UK and is being made widely available.

It sets out guidelines for how cases of equine neglect and abuse should be reported and handled, and what the relevant organisations can do to reduce the incidence of equine welfare problems. It is designed to communicate the responsibilities of those who own, keep or interact with horses to prevent cruelty and inadequate care and to address these issues effectively when they arise.

The protocol demonstrates the commitment of the organisations and agencies to work effectively and co-operatively for the improvement of equine welfare generally and the rapid and effective relief of equine suffering. Its considerations are the prevention of equine suffering and neglect, and when necessary their rapid remediation.

The Blue Cross is one of 15 welfare organisations signing up to the protocol. We are committed to promoting proper use of the horse and responsible animal ownership, in support of practical welfare services through our three dedicated equine welfare centres, which rehabilitate and rehome horses in need.
