Young offenders in Buckley have built a pet memorial as part of work undertaken with the supervision of probation staff.

Previously unused land next to Bistre Parish Church has been turned into a community area with the aid of a lottery grant of just under £60,000.

Local residents will have the option of planting a tree for their pets in one garden area.

Local dog owner Karen Morgan told the Daily Post: "Seeing offenders giving back in this way makes you feel that they are doing something worthwhile with their time to produce something creative for the good of the local community. I think an area like that, particularly if the dog has played on that field, will be ideal."

The community area, dubbed the Flash, has facilities for both young and old, while the team of young offenders will maintain the space for the course of their sentences.

Plaques will also be laid for deceased pets, with the necessary labour carried out by the young offenders.
