Dog owners in England are being advised that new codes supporting the Animal Welfare Act 2006 will come into force on 6 April.

The pet care information shows owners how to look after their dog, ensuring it lives in a safe environment and is protected from hazards such as open windows and poisonous household chemicals.

Dog owners should make sure their pet has access to clean water at all times and has a variety of toys to play with so it doesn't get bored or distressed.

The new code also gives guidance on dog training and says that pet owners should allow their dogs to regularly interact with other friendly dogs.

Animal welfare minister Jim Fitzpatrick unveiled the new codes at a rehoming centre. He said: "We're a nation of animal lovers, but sadly too many people still don't know how to look after their pets properly and get things wrong. It's the animals who suffer as a result."

He said that the new codes gave pet owners straightforward advice on their responsibilities and legal duty of care to their pets and gave guidance on how to protect pets from pain, injury and disease.ADNFCR-1137-ID-19659042-ADNFCR
