Pickle

Pickle

Pickle, originally known as Nike, arrived at Northiam adoption centre as a four-year-old. Pickle was showing signs of anorexia, which may have been a result of stress, as centre manager Maria Marmo explains: "Nike did not respond well to living in a cattery environment, and despite efforts made by staff at the Northiam centre, continued to lose weight and developed liver problems."

Nike's condition deteriorated and, after seeing a local vet, was transferred to the Blue Cross animal hospital in Merton, London.

Maria says: "Nike needed more tests and exploratory surgery to decipher what was wrong. The result came back all fine with nothing serious, so we set about helping Nike recover, with lots of physical attention and care basically."

"Nike was held in special regard at the centre, and staff knew it was only a matter of time before the loving cat was rehomed. This cat would literally give you a hug and would want one back," says Maria.

Happily, Nike soon regained an appetite and was rehomed in May 2008 to Phyllis and John. The couple visited the centre in the hope of giving a cat a new home, and fell in love with Nike instantly: "Nike approached John, miaowed, and it was love at first sight!" says Phyllis.

We felt Nike desperately needed the love and comfort of a home in the country, so our choice was made, adds Phyllis.

The couple decided to rename the cat Pickle, and the lovable feline soon answered to this new name, with a little help from the treats box!

Phyllis explains that within a couple of weeks Pickle had adjusted to the new environment in the country and was soon happily exploring the area: "Pickle loves company and a tummy rub. Then after the evening meal, enjoys either sitting under John's chair in the study or on his desk next to the computer", she adds.

Pickle has been through an ordeal during the past year, but is now enjoying life to the full.

"Pickle is the most loveable cat anyone could wish for." says John. "We are so pleased with the way Pickle has settled down with us."
